Great question! The white, porous walls are meant to resemble travertine, a kind of limestone loved by Michelangelo. To save money, Italian plasterers used a process they’d invented to simulate it by crumbling dried plaster into a wet mixture to create the bubbles and impurities, similar to limestone deposits in streams.
Massive tourist draw. It is a remarkable piece of architecture with marble walls and floors complimented by beautiful splashes of wrought iron railing. The stores are higher end artsy and pseudo hippie. It gets a lot of road traffic because it is located in the downtown area of funky street musicians, stores and a wide variety of shops, all within walking distance. Lots of income there for both the city and the state.
Metered street parking is free on Sunday in Asheville. The parking garages are not.
